The photo above is the inspiration piece. My client loves this piece, but has some very specific size restrictions. In addition to the size restrictions, they want to change the finished just a bit. Let's see how I do. Today I am building a custom kitchen hutch for an amazing couple! I made the cabinet boxes out of 3/4" maple plywood. The top of the cabinets is 2"thick solid Hickory that I milled down from rough sawn 8/4 Hickory. Today was all about joinery. Yesterday's hutch now has custom raised panel doors. Here's a tip though when making custom doors. Your door will shrink by the depth of the mortise and tenon, so make sure you take that into account when designing you doors. 😕 I learned that one the hard way. Completed custom kitchen hutch. From a conceptual sketch on a legal pad. This piece has 2" thick distressed Hickory tops finished with water based walnut wiping stain and polyacrylic. It has hand made poplar cathedral doors. The cabinet and doors are finished with an "antiqued" chalked paint. Today, Produced a solid hickory bench for an amazing couple! This piece will be in their family for generations. Good luck moving it though! It's 15"x18"x72" with a 2"thick solid Hickory seat. This one took right at 7 hrs to produce. I planed down 8/4 Hickory for the seat and the legs. The skirt boards are 1x4 Hickory. Iused Kreg pocket screw jig for all joints except to laminate the seat, and that was done with a double row of #20 biscuits and Gorilla wood glue. All of the wood was supplied by Fine Lumber & Plywood in Austin TX. Because some asked if I ever actually finish my work. 😁 I would love to create your one of a kind impossible to find custom piece. Final photo of my custom Hickory bench seat next to its inspiration table at my clients home in Austin Texas!
Today produced a custom closet piece for a former NFL player friend of mine. I guess he misses his locker room days! He texted me this sketch yesterday afternoon: I took his sketch and produced this piece less than 24 hours later: He wanted a shelf unit made from pine that would overlap his baseboards in his closet and maximize the space for the shelves. The final product installed in my friend's closet!
Today I am building a knotty alder front door for a client in Kansas City! They bought a home built in the 30's that has ties to the mob and wanted a front door that makes a statement. They want to connect to the history of the home so a speakeasy door was the natural choice. I have really enjoyed the research as well as milling my own tongue and groove knotty alder! The door they need is 42"x 81" and is 2 1/2" thick. I am building it as a solid core with 1" cedar core and 3/4" knotty alder skins. Stay tuned for progress updates. Should only take a couple of days. Today I built the core frame, milled all of the 1x6 alder to a T&G v joint and laminated the first side. This photo is from the "inside" of the door. I'm not going to lie, building a solid exterior door is no easy task. Today I laminated the 2nd side and edged the entire door slab. I plan on building the jambs today too. Here's the latest pic. Today produced a 80" x 42" x 2-1/2" custom knotty alder door slab and a custom 6-9/16" alder jamb. Now I know why it's always been so hard to get a production crew to 5-S at the end of a long day! Finished the knotty alder speak easy front door. This one is 2-1/2" thick and was created from custom tongue and groove knotty alder 1x6 with a solid cedar core. The strap hinges are hand forged and the jamb and threshold were both custom created from 1x8 clear alder.
